I think caching will give you the biggest speed up and will also be compatible if WordPress changes. For example if they switch how spell checking is done.

Another thing you might be able to do is to create your own plugin and have that plugin turn off parts of the code you don’t want to run. You could probably use the hooks and filters for this.
